Build decisions

So what we essentially have here is a blank canvas. Nothing has been done already that can’t be reversed for any race series that we’re interested in, namely Roadsports, Club Enduro, MSVT Trackday challenge or BMWCCR Class 6.

My biggest concern was that the original builder had been overly zealous with the scissors to the wiring loom. Since it was fitted with a limited slip differential, traction control would just have been a hindrance, and all of the sensors and associated wiring had been removed. It’s always difficult stepping into someone else work and trying to figure out exactly had been done. The 330 Challenge (bmw330challenge regulations) specified that you could delete ABS, it was deactivated, but thank goodness the wiring loom for this was still intact, albeit showing a fault. The drive home from Scotland without ABS OR Traction Control and on crap tyres in the wet was a memorable one! Rest assured it was a VERY intimidating drive home with the feeling that I’d bitten off much more than expected. I certainly plan to do a shakedown season of track days in 2021 before attempting the ARDS test to get my racing license.

All the mods were pretty generic to the motorsport scene like the roll cage, limited slip differential (actually a Quaife ATB), lexan windows, seats and harness, extinguisher etc. The only decision now is which series to build it for.

The most restrictive set of rules are for the BMW Car Club Racing (BMWCCR) Class 6 cars. ( download class 6 regulations here) They run a control tyre (Class 6 the only permitted tyres are the MRF ZT12 (hard) Range of sizes allowed and the Uniroyal Rainsport.), they don’t permit aftermarket air boxes, no independent throttle bodies, however induction kits are approved provided the OEM single throttle body is retained. Suspension is free provided the original pick up points are used but do not permit remote canisters for the shocks.

The 750 Motor Club and the MSVT are more relaxed about tyres etc. so I’ve made my decision based on cost and a control tyre doesn’t cut it for me unfortunately. That being said I’ll not build it outside of the other Class 6 restrictions. I just want the chance to shop around for rubber and keep the cost to a minimum. If I wish to race in Class 6, then I can always get a set of tyres.

So 750MC Roadsports and Club Enduro it is then. Roadsports are great value and run as a ‘series’ i.e. individual events and are 45 mins long. Club Enduro is a championship which run longer races, typically between 90 mins and 2 hours.
